A self-styled “workers’ priest” who served as archbishop of Montreal for almost two decades, Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, has fallen seriously ill and currently resides in a hospital. The news was confirmed by the archdiocese of Montreal, which stated on Tuesday that the 78-year-old cardinal has been in hospital for a few weeks.

Director of communications for the archdiocese, Lucie Martineau, confirmed that the cardinal is suffering from “fragile” health for several years, including complications related to diabetes. While refuting claims that he was in palliative care, Ms. Martineau stated that “he is undergoing treatment. His condition is serious.” According to a message on its website, the archdiocese has asked people to pray for him, “for his health to improve.” Vicar-General, Monsignor Michel Parent, also revealed to have met the cardinal in hospital. He alleged that “the archbishop emeritus before me was entirely at peace, utterly ‘tuned’ to the Lord, in full acceptance of His will,” adding that “We prayed together for a long time.”

Back in 2008, Cardinal Turcotte surrendered his Order of Canada in protest against the abortion doctor, Henry Morgentaler, receiving the same honour.  A professor in the Catholic studies program at McGill University in Montreal, John Zucchi, mentioned on Tuesday that “he had a real, deep concern for the poor,” explaining that “I heard him say a few times that we’re living in a post-Christian world. He wanted to reach out to the secular world.” Prof. Zucchi added that “he kept saying, this is not the church of the 1950s.”
