One of the three suspect accused of plotting to carry out terrorist acts in Ottawa four years ago, Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, has pled guilty to a charge of possessing explosives with an intent to injure. 34-year-old Mohammad Alizadeh entered the plea at an Ottawa court on Wednesday morning.
The judge was told that as part of the plea deal, he is to be sentenced to 24 years in prison with credit for the time served since his arrest, which means that Alizadeh’s sentence works out to a maximum of 18 years. He will not be eligible for parole for nine years. In his remarks at the hearing, Justice Colin McKinnon mentioned that “you have had the benefit of the presumption of innocence, due process as guaranteed by our Charter of Rights and Freedoms and been represented by experienced and well-prepared counsel, luxuries you would undoubtedly not provide to your intended victims.” Whereas on the other hand, Alizadeh alleged that “I realize how much mistakes I have done,” acknowledging that his actions have caused irrevocable damage to his family and community.
Alizadeh’s co-accused London, Ont. pathologist, Khurram Syed Sher, was found not guilty last month. Whereas the second co-accused, Misbahuddin Ahmed, was convicted of two of the three charges against him in July. The charges were laid after an all-inclusive 11-month RCMP-led investigation, dubbed Operation Samossa, which took place from September 2009 to August 2010. Police acquired videos, drawings, schematics, instructions and books about how to build improvised explosive devices, along with 50 circuit boards design to detonate remotely controlled devices.
