NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has out-rightly stated that his party opposes Canada’s military mission in Iraq and feels history is repeating itself. Muclair bitterly criticized Immigration Minister Chris Alexander for alleging that Islamic State (ISIS) might use weapons of mass destruction, saying that such talk makes you remember former U.S. president George W. Bush in 2003.

Mr. Mulcair mentioned that “I guess that’s how it becomes an emotional debate and that’s how you wind up with the type of rant you got from Mr. Alexander.” He highlighted that “at the end of the day, Mr. Alexander’s invocation of weapons of mass destruction makes us believe we’re in a time machine. It’s not serious.” In addition to that, the leader of the Opposition stressed that he is sure that Canada’s mission will last longer than 30 days.

Furthermore, he questioned that “how did we get involved in Afghanistan?” and replied himself explaining that “Canada sent over a special number of forces, we were going over for just a short while and it wound up being the longest war we have ever been involved in.” Mulcair pointed out that his party is still unaware of the deployment of 69 Canadian soldiers sent to Iraq and so it won’t support the Harper government in its mission. He alleged that “the NDP wants a vote in the House of Commons based on full information. We don’t have that right now, so the only responsible thing to do is say no to this mission.”
