Tens of thousands of Nova Scotia Power customers are experiencing blackouts after a low pressure system moved through northeast towards Newfoundland and brought high winds to Nova Scotia on Monday. Majaority of the outages are concentrated around and in the Halifax region. Sources confirm that almost 25,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were still in the dark as of 8 a.m. AT, while the figure evem surpassed 50, 000 during peak hours.

According to the spokeswoman of NSP, Neera Ritcey, the company had already made special arrangement for the expectd outages and had more than 80 crews members on standby on Sunday night, along with additional 50 or so contractor and tree crews. She explaind ethat “We have been preparing since we saw the forecast. We have had 82 Nova Scotia Power crews on standby to be deployed this morning at the first light of day across the province as needed.”

Furthermore, Ritcey predicted that it might take until Monday evening to fully restore power to some customers. Iwas elucidated that “the restore times are based on our best estimates at the time, so what we’re doing this morning, with the daylight starting to appear, our crews are doing an assessment of the extent of  the damage.” Ritcey stated that “because of that, it’s unsafe for crews to be going up in buckets to do the restoration work so we have to first make sure that the winds slow down to a certain degree before we can start that work.”
