A senior medical officer of health at The Royal Alexandra Hospital, Gerry Predy, has confirmed that its emergency department is all set to reopen later today after an Ebola scare shut it down around 6:30 a.m. on Monday. Predy explained that the department was closed as a precaution after a patient came in who had travelled to Africa.

In his remarks, Predy elucidated that “he was immediately isolated and continues in isolation at this time,” and “we’ve now determined the patient does not have Ebola so the department will be reopening.” Official news release from the health authority confirmed that the Alberta Health Services staff is cleaning and disinfecting the area as a precautionary measure on Monday. Officials are set to reopen the department at around 11 a.m. after confirming that the patient had not travelled to any areas of Africa with pockets of the illness. Predy explained that “because it is a disease that is spreading in Africa, we have to be on the lookout for it” adding that “our staff are vigilant in looking for potential Ebola cases.”

The Ebola virus causes an acute, serious illness which is often fatal if untreated. Its recent outbreak was triggered by a case in West Africa in March 2014, making it one of the largest and most complex Ebola outbreak since the Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976. It is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.
