After the announcement of resignation by two more Calgary MLAs, Albertans are now preparing to vote in four byelections in the coming weeks. Calgary-Foothills MLA, Len Webber, mentioned in a statement issued on Monday that he’s resigning from his position to focus on his forthcoming campaign for federal office, i.e. a move anticipated to clear the way for a byelection run by Premier Jim Prentice.

A former PC cabinet minister, Webber, announced to resign as an MLA after he captured the federal Conservative nomination for Calgary-Confederation on Saturday. The thrice elected MLA from the north Calgary riding, Webber added that “I will work to earn the right to stand up for Calgary-Confederation in Ottawa by running an engaging campaign, and to do this I need to close the chapter on my time as a MLA today.”

Whereas in addition to that, Calgary-West MLA Ken Hughes also declared to step down to help with the renewal of the Progressive Conservative party. Hughes had supported Prentice in the PC leadership race after halting his own campaign for the top job this summer. The former energy minister alleged that he will continue to support the long-governing party. He mentioned that “nobody can argue with the analysis that the Progressive Conservative party, the caucus, the cabinet and the Government have needed renewal” adding that “we are seeing that essential renewal taking place under the leadership of … Jim Prentice.”
