Hundreds gathered at the memorial service of the beloved cop, Ottawa Police Staff Sgt. Kal Ghadban, who committed suicide inside police headquarters on Sunday. An estimate of 700 friends, family and coworkers convened at the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, majority of which were officers in uniform, wearing black bands wrapped around their badges in mourning.

According to his close friend knows Ghadban since 2001, Insp. Paul Johnston, “he was probably one of the best officers I’ve ever had the privilege to work with,” adding that “he was a professional police officer, one that we all respected and we’re going to dearly miss.” The casket was escorted by police motorcycles and bagpipes played and officers stood at salute as his casket, followed closely behind by his three young children and family, when it was carried inside. Johnston stated that “he gave, he gave, he gave and, I guess, for us, we’re just asking ourselves, ‘What did we miss?'” He alleged that “we never saw this coming, and that’s a wake-up call for us that we need to take care of ourselves. Anybody can be vulnerable to what happened.”

Whereas on the other hand, Premier Kathleen Wynne also observed a “day of grieving” while in the capital. Addressing reporters at the Ottawa Convention Centre, where she was a keynote speaker at the Canada2020 conference, Wynne stated that “my thoughts are with his family.” She mentioned that “I know that the funeral was (Thursday) and the pain that that family is in.” The work of first-responders is “extremely stressful. There’s absolutely no doubt about that.”
