The man who shoot a rampaging gunman dead on Parliament Hill, Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers, is being applauded at every stage. Highlighting that it was the first that he shot a gun in the line of duty, Vickers’ niece, Erin, alleged that “this the first time in his career that he’s shot anyone.”

Retired RCMP officer, 58-year-old Vickers, once served in Calgary and is best known to most Canadians as the symbol of order at the House of Commons. He killed a gunman who charged into the Centre Block on Parliament Hill on Tuesday. Justice Minister, Peter MacKay, mentioned in a tweet that “to all in Ottawa, stay safe & strong. Thank God for Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our Cdn security forces. True heroes…” Whereas Canada’s Minister of Veterans Affairs, Julian Fantino, also stated that “I am safe & profoundly grateful to Sgt at Arms Kevin Vickers & our security forces for selfless act of keeping us safe.”

Vickers’ family are concerned about the emotional trauma that might follow after having shot someone dead. Vickers’ older sister, Mary, alleged that “we’re always very proud of Kevin, but at this moment we are concerned about him — he had to make a very serious decision today.” She stressed that “he’s always a natural leader. He would not have taken this decision lightly, and I can’t stress that enough — but he would always expect of himself to do what he would expect of the men and women under him.”
