The body of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was shot dead at National War Memorial on Wednesday, was escorted by police motorcycles down the Highway of Heroes. In a statement issued on Friday by Veterans Affairs Minister, Julian Fantino, he said that “it is fitting that he travels along the Highway of Heroes,” adding that “a nation is mourning a loss, and that of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent as well.”

The procession received a little bit of both applaud and tears on Friday afternoon as Cirillo’s body left the McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home in Ottawa en route along Hwy. 401 to his hometown of Hamilton, Ont. An escort of police forces was set along the route, where thousands had gathered to salute the solider. One of those waiting to salute the officer, Kimberly Leclair of Ottawa, stated that “I’m here to support the family. They lost a son, father and the country lost innocence.” Cirillo was shot dead while on duty as a guard at the National War Memorial on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile a big crowd stood in silence at the main Cenotaph in Trenton, Ont., at a vigil organized on Friday morning by the Highway of Heroes Ride to honour both Cirillo and Vincent, i.e. an officer who died after being run over in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. on Monday. Motorcycles were parked at the four corners of the cenotaph. Bouquets of flowers were laid at the base. One of the organizers and a former reservist, Graeme Hume, stated that “we’re here for our brothers and sisters in arms.”
