The Canadian teacher in detainment for more than three months in Indonesia, Neil Bantleman, is finally being charged in relation to his sexual assault allegations. The family has confirmed that a prosecutor in Jakarta, where Bantleman has been in police custody for 108 days, has accepted his file and will be moving to charge him.
Bantleman worked as a learning co-ordinator at the Jakarta International School (JIS) and was arrested as part of an investigation into the sexual assault of three kindergarten students. He was questioned for almost nine hours before being detained without charge. Bantleman’s brother, Guy, claims to have made several failed attempts to contact the minister of state for foreign affairs and consular, Lynne Yelich, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Baird, seeking a formal statement from the Canadian government in support of his brother. A letter addressed to them on Oct. 17 said that “while I understand Indonesian law permits this type of detention, the manner in which Neil was detained, the subsequent numerous issues with the case, and absurd allegations deem his continued incarceration unjustified.”
Whereas on the other hand, Guy Bantleman confessed that his family was expecting Neil to be released after the 120-day mark of his detainment. He alleged that “there was no physical evidence and the allegations were ludicrous at best,” so “I’ve had this uneasy feeling that there was about an 80 per cent chance he would be released, but obviously once I found out today, it was devastating.”
