The National Council of Canadian Muslims has mentioned in its recent report that anti-Muslim harassment cases are on the rise in Canada in response to last week’s attacks that caused two soldiers death. According to the authorities, both suspects were inspired by militant group Islamic State.
The group has announced to have observed a tenfold increase in reports of harassment, including racial slurs on public buses, notes left on car windshields and bullying at schools. Human rights coordinator of the group, Amy Awad, stated that “there are some very positive signs that we’ve noticed in the form of calls of support and examples of people resisting bigotry.” He added that “but there has been a large increase in complaints, too.” Awad elucidated that a normal amount of nationwide anti-Muslim incident is almost five a week, whereas “that has gone up about tenfold, with a real surge in the past few days.”
There have been increased fears about homegrown extremism in Canada after one gunman shot a soldier and charged into the Parliament building in Ottawa on Oct. 22, while the other rammed two soldiers with his car near Montreal, killing one, two days earlier. A recent incident in Cold Lake, Alberta, resulted in residents grouping together to clean and repair a mosque that had been vandalized after the Ottawa attack. After scrubbing away the spray-painted words “Go Home,” the volunteers taped up a sign saying: “You are home.”
