The federal transportation minister, Denis Lebel, seems to have rested his plans to rename the Champlain Bridge after hockey star, Maurice Richard, on Thursday morning. The announcement was made after weeks of rumors circulation regarding the renaming of the new bridge to replace the Champlain Bridge, i.e. slated to open in 2018.

In a new development, Coalition Avenir Québec leader, François Legault, has suggested Samuel de Champlain’s name to stay on the replacement bridge over the St-Lawrence, while suggesting that that the 155-year-old Victoria Bridge might be renamed after hockey legend, Maurice Richard, if need be. Participating in the ongoing controversy over bridge names, Legault retreated from his neutral position and openly stated that “I think the bridge should stay Samuel de Champlain.” Legault denied having had changed his mind on the matter over the last few days even though he had earlier stated during a weekend policy convention that both Champlain and Richard should somehow be honored and did not make his preference known.

Legault alleged that “I said we have to honour both,” adding that “I was very cautious in my remarks; we have to honour the two.” He stated that “we aren’t against the idea of honouring Maurice Richard. Perhaps we could give him the Victoria Bridge. I am not a monarchist.” Denying the name game is too hot to handle for any politician, Legault said Premier Philippe Couillard needs to get a better grasp of history and stand up for Champlain.
