Toronto pest control company has highlighted that the present renovations at Union Station have turned the site into a breeding ground for rats who will now find new homes in the area. A statement issued by Abell Pest Control’s Steven Graff on Monday said that while the transit hub gets a facelift, rats have been forced out of nests in subway tunnels and dark corners. The company cautioned those living and working in the downtown area, advising them to keep an eye out for the four-legged critters.

The company elucidated that rats usually live outdoors during the summer and migrate indoors during winter time. Graff pointed out that while the rodent colony from Union Station moves away from the site, current rat populations will push out of the downtown core. Graff alleged that “we’re urging businesses and homeowners to be proactive,” advising all home and business owners to plug all entry points, including damaged door frames and holes left from vents. Meanwhile, the City of Toronto also highlighted that rats search for openings larger than two centimetres in diameter and so any opening wider than that should be covered with metal sheeting, and any vents can be covered with heavy gauge wire mesh.

Furthermore, the city recommended public not to keep garbage and composting containers unattended longer than necessary and store all food in rodent-proof containers. According to the city, residents should monitor their property for signs of rats, like capsule-shaped droppings, burrows and chewed food.
