Durham Regional Police have revealed to have charged a 51-year-old Oshawa man, Aubrey Griffith, with impersonating a Toronto police officer after finding him in full uniform at around 10:45 a.m. on Monday. A Durham police officer driving to court saw a Griffith wearing a Toronto officer’s uniform while waiting at a bus stop near Bond St. E. and Wilson Rd.

According to the statement issued by Durham Police on Tuesday, the officer noticed some differences in the uniform and soon realized it wasn’t “general practice” for a police officer from a different jurisdiction to use public transit in full uniform. Consequently, the officer questioned the man and immediately found out that he had bought the outfit, which included a Toronto Police Service uniform shirt, duty belt and memo book, online. Durham police Sgt., Bill Calder, alleged that “the shirt was genuine” as was the Toronto police memo book, which isn’t supposed to be available for public use.

Sgt. Calder alleged that “he could put himself in a position of advantage, meaning to obtain personal information from somebody, or to exercise some kind of control.” Although, Calder did state that there was nothing that could have indicated that Griffith intended to take advantage of the uniform. However, he added that “we’re still investigating what his motives might have been.” Consequently, 51-year-old Griffith, of Oshawa, is now facing charges including impersonating a police officer and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.
