Thousands of Canadians gathered to the National War Memorial in order to pay their respects to fallen soldiers on Tuesday, i.e. the same site where Canadian soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot dead just three weeks ago. It was an extraordinarily emotional Remembrance Day service in Ottawa due to the recent attacks on Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, the Canadian soldier killed in a cowardly hit and run Oct. 20 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, south of Montreal.

A retired veteran at the service, Wayne Forster, alleged that “we are Canada proud” while looking out across the sea of red poppies darting off the jackets of the close to 80,000 spectators. He stated that “we believe in our country and we have a resiliency that we don’t normally see on a day-to-day basis, but it’s there.” Forster recalled to have served thrice in Afghanistan, once in Bosnia and the Persian Gulf. While acknowledging many fallen soldiers he spent time with in his 27-year military career, Forster highlighted that Remembrance Day is also about honouring those who are still fighting to keep our country safe.

Forster alleged that “there is a shortlist of people that I knew, that I trained, that I worked with throughout my military career that are no longer with us, but my focus today is to remember not only the ones we have lost, but the ones that are still serving that still make this their day-to-day lifestyle,” adding that “it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle for a soldier and a veteran.”
