Montreal mayor Denis Coderre has chosen long-time political rival, Richard Bergeron, to be on his executive committee. Bergeron recently vacated his position as head of Project Montreal last month and sat as an independent. He has now been made in charge of development for the downtown core.

While making the announcement, Mayor Coderre alleged that his new ally is a man of integrity and highlighted that Bergeron’s presence is necessary for Montreal’s growth. He mentioned that “this is not parliament,” adding that “if we have people with great talent who love Montreal, who want to play a role to build up this great metropolis, well then we have to address it.” This will not be the first time that Bergeron will play a role in the executive committee at City hall, he has previously been named in the executive committee of Mayor Gerald Tremblay in 2010 though that didn’t turn out so well.

However, Bergeron now thinks that this time a political partnership from across the aisle will be more productive. He told reporters at City Hall on Tuesday that “the difference with Denis Coderre is the things that he says he can get done, he can do. That’s the difference.” Furthermore, Bergeron insisted that there’s no awkwardness with his former party, Project Montreal, which he founded ten years ago. He also revealed his plan to part take in the next executive committee meeting as an observer on Wednesday.
