The MP booted from the separatist Bloc Quebecois for publicly opposing Quebec’s values charter, Maria Mourani, joined the NDP on Wednesday. Representing Montreal’s Ahuntsic riding as an independent since 2013, Mourani, signed her NDP membership card in front of reporters in Ottawa.

Mourani vowed to continue to sit as an independent until the 2015 election, while adding that she hasn’t yet thought about running for the NDP then either. In case Mourani decides to, she will have to go through the nomination process before officially running as an NDP candidate. An African-born Montrealer of Lebanese descent, Mourani, became a federalist after having a fall out with Bloc Quebecois. Mourani openly spoke against the provincial Parti Quebecois’ values charter in 2013, which sought to ban public employees from wearing certain religious symbols in the workplace. Consequently, she was kicked out from The Bloc.

Explaining why she picked NDP, Mourani said she shares their progressive values and also because she rejected offers from the Greens and Liberals. Mourani revealed to have rejected a “serious” offer from the Liberals because she was not allowed to meet Trudeau, she alleged that this only proved that Trudeau “is not a leader who leads.” Mourani alleged that backroom advisers, not Trudeau, run the party. She said that “the Liberal party doesn’t change,” adding that “just the frame changes.” Whereas on the other hand, Trudeau informed reporters that Mourani approached the Liberals, instead of the other way around, and “we indicated that there is a process and we have open nominations.” He said that the discussions “never got far enough along for me to actually sit down and meet with her.”
