An Ontario court has sentenced the only accused suspect held responsible for the misleading robocalls, 26-year-old Michael Sona, to nine months in prison almost three years after voters in Guelph received mysterious telephone calls directing them to the wrong polling stations.

Mr. Sona spent his first night behind bars on Wednesday after Judge Gary Hearn announced to jail him for his role in a scheme to send out the automated calls on federal Election Day in 2011. Mr. Sona appeared in headlines of many stories appearing throughout 2012 and 2013. Additionally, Sona was also sentenced to an additional 12 months of probation after his jail term ends. The court ruling also said that he will have to at least spend three months in a provincial jail before becoming eligible to apply for parole. Mr. Sona’s family was in tears soon after the former Parliament Hill staffer was led out of court to begin serving the sentence.

Before announcing his decision, Judge Hearn called Sona’s crime “an affront to the electoral process,” alleging that imprisonment was necessary to effectively denounce such a serious offence. He said that “Mr. Sona’s actions themselves speak to a lack of appreciation and respect for the rights of all voters,” adding that “they represent a complete disregard for our political system and its values.” He said that the sentence “must send a message to others that are so inclined that such trickery in the political arena is conduct that will be dealt with by the court in a significant way.”
