Finance Minister Wes Sheridan mentioned in the legislature on Tuesday that Prince Edward Island might go to the polls as early as next spring, so the Progressive Conservatives should get themselves a permanent leader. Sheridan was commenting on a motion tabled by Deputy Premier, George Webster, which asked all MLAs to accept and confide the authority of the lieutenant-governor to dissolve the legislature outside of the province’s fixed election date.

According to Sheridan, the motion is aimed to ensure that all political parties are prepared for election at any time. Sheridan said that “our Liberal party now is leaderless, just like the Conservative party has been for the past 2 1/2 years, and we want to give them warning, it’s time. In case a new (Liberal) leader wants to call an election right away,” adding that “we’re saying to the other parties, get your house in order.” In an announcement made last week, Premier Robert Ghiz revealed his plans to resign early in the New Year. Thereafter, Liberal party of P.E.I. has scheduled a leadership convention in February.

Whereas on the other hand, the Progressive Conservative party has not made any mention to change their planned leadership convention on May 30, 2015. Party president, Peter McQuaid, said that there are no plans to move this date forward, regardless of Ghiz’s resignation. Sheridan alleged that “they’ve had two-and-a-half years to get ready, we’ve had five days. We can do ours in February and they don’t think it’s necessary,” adding that “no one wants to be surprised by an election call.”
