Authorities have confirmed that Mounties are moving in to evacuate pipeline protesters’ camp set up at Burnaby Mountain. The officers arrived at the site at around 8:30 a.m. and read the injunction to the protesters. Several people have been arrested as police asks protesters to move to the opposite side of the road or remain at the camp and be arrested.

According to Staff Sergeant Major, John Buis, “RCMP have strived to balance the need to maintain public safety and civil order with a democratic right to hold demonstrations. In many cases, the Burnaby RCMP has facilitated that right, and in the case of the protesters on Burnaby Mountain, we have established a lawful assembly area for those who wish to continue to protest peacefully and lawfully.” Buis stated that “protesters who continue to contravene the order will be arrested for civil contempt of the order and the injunction.” Buis confirmed that body-worn cameras will be used “by the Burnaby RCMP during today’s operation, as we dismantle the protest camps in violation of the order.”

Upon inquiry about whether officers will physically move the camp, Buis stated that “there are provisions in the operational plan to move the camp.” The existence of Kinder Morgan survey crews on-site today is not confirmed. The Mounties are imposing the injunction order issued to move demonstrators out the way of Kinder Morgan survey workers went into effect on Monday afternoon. The Trans Mountain pipeline project would see the amount of oil sent from Alberta to BC tripled.
