Authorities have confirmed that ice buildup in West Winnipeg has resulted in knocked out hydro lines and no power for almost 3,700 Manitoba Hydro customers on Sunday evening. A Manitoba Hydro spokesperson confirmed at around 11 p.m. on Sunday night that the outage affects customers west of Cavalier Drive, through the Crestview neighbourhood into Headingley, and later updated by midnight that power has been restored to 1,400 customers.

The spokesman explained that the problem is triggered by issues with three feeder lines, which have resulted in burned lines near the Flying J truck stop in Headingley. Additionally, it was explained that Hydro workers have to “roll ice” off the lines and then work to repair the damage. However, an estimated time for the fix was not provided. Furthermore, the spokesperson also confessed that sporadic outages are also affecting other areas.

The freezing drizzle, snow and colder temperatures are all contributing to increasing slippery conditions across southern Manitoba, including the Interlake and the Red River Valley south to the American border. Consequently, Winnipeg police has warned motorists and pedestrians to exercise extra care. Meanwhile, Mayor Brian Bowman posted a tweet which confirmed that de-icing products are being applied to bridges and regional sidewalks are also being sanded. According to Winnipeg police spokesman, Const. Jason Michalyshen, a handful of collisions in the mid-afternoon could be weather-related. Michalyshen stated that “really, it’s reduce your speed,” adding that “it’s standard stuff: give yourself lots of time and be patient.”
