The federal government and the True Patriot Love Foundation have announced to jointly donate up to $10 million for research aimed to better health and wellness issues encountered by veterans and their families. The announcement was made by Health Minister, Rona Ambrose, and co-founder and vice-chair of the TPL foundation, Michael Burns, on Monday afternoon.

According to a statement issued by the government, its half of the funding, i.e. $5 million, will be awarded to the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR) in order “to mobilize and promote the uptake of research to better address the health and wellness of Canadian Forces personnel, Veterans, and their families.” Whereas the other half of the funds, collected by True Patriot Love through private donations, were announced to be spent on research and programming “designed to improve the mental health and well-being of this important and significant population.”

It was highlighted that the funding research will lead to “evidence-based practices” and improved health care services for veterans. Ambrose said that “working together, through public and private partnerships like this, we can all help to make positive changes in the lives of our soldiers, Veterans, and their families.” Whereas Burns alleged that the new funds will support the work of more than 1,000 researchers across Canada, adding that “their important work will have an immediate and far-reaching effect on the health and well-being of countless members of our military, veterans and their families.”
