New Brunswick Premier, Brian Gallant, has mentioned in a press statement issued on Wednesday that he will remove barriers restricting access to abortion in the province. The premier vowed to change regulation 84-20 in the Medical Services Payment Act, which necessitates notes from two doctors alleging the abortion is medically necessary. Furthermore, the changes are also anticipated to remove the requirement that abortions be performed by a specialist.

Gallant announced that the reforms will be imposed on Jan. 1, which will put abortions in the same category as other insured medical services. The statement issued by Gallant said that “as a province, we have a responsibility to respect women’s rights and our legal obligations by providing this procedure in a safe environment like any other insured service under medicare.” Abortion restrictions discussion was triggered in the province after its only abortion clinic, The Morgentaler Clinic in Fredericton, closed in July. The government aims to work with the regional health authorities in order to improve capacity and timeliness of access, along with providing sources of accurate, non-judgmental information.

Whereas on the other hand, the president of New Brunswick Right to Life, Peter Ryan, mentioned in a press statement that abortion is “not required by law, women’s health or ethics.” Ryan stated that “no law or Supreme Court ruling has ever stated that a province must provide abortion on demand. What’s going on is a pro-abortion ideology is being imposed upon New Brunswick. That’s wrong.” It was highlighted that “removing a baby is not like removing an appendix.”
