The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) has confessed in a recent press statement that its employee accidentally disclosed confidential taxpayer information to a CBC reporter. According to the statement issued by the CRA, the security breach or the release of personal information was a “human error.”

CRA Commissioner, Andrew Treusch, mentioned that “when the CRA became aware of the breach, CRA officials immediately contacted the CBC to inform them of the error and retrieve the documents.” Treusch explained that “retrieval efforts continue. The CBC did not respond to the CRA’s request to retrieve the information. Regrettably, the CBC chose to publicly disclose the names.” Whereas on the other hand, CBC has reported the tax information to include data pertaining to hundreds of Canadians, including many of the rich and famous, and their home addresses and tax credits.

Treusch stated that “I have contacted the Privacy Commissioner of Canada to notify him of the privacy breach,” adding that “the CRA will provide the Privacy Commissioner with a preliminary privacy breach report within 24 hours. Those individuals affected will be contacted by registered mail, provided with a dedicated phone number to call to get more information, and advised of their right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.” Lastly, the commissioner alleged that the CRA sincerely regrets the error. Whereas, the CBC alleged that the slip up included 18 pages of confidential information.
