Ghomeshi Receives $100,000 Bail in Sex Assault Case

Former CBC radio host, Jian Ghomeshi, has been released on $100,000 bail after being charged with four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance, choking. 47-year-old Ghomeshi faced a rush of reporters on his way out of College Park courthouse following the bail hearing on Wednesday afternoon. However, Ghomeshi refused to say anything as he staring straight ahead while being escorted outside the building by officers.

In addition to the officers, Ghomeshi was accompanied by his lawyer, Marie Henein, who made a brief statement on his behalf at the steps of the courthouse. Henien stated that “Mr. Ghomeshi will be pleading not guilty. We will address these allegations fully and directly in a courtroom.” Henein added that “it is not my practice to litigate my cases in the media and this one will be no different. We will say whatever we have to say in a court of law.”

Ghomeshi’s bail conditions compel him to surrender his passport and reside with his mother Sarah Azar Ghomeshi. In addition to that, Ghomeshi has been ordered to maintain distance and avoid any contact, direct or indirect, with the three complainants in the case. Speaking on behalf of Ghomeshi during his court appearance on Wednesday, Henein informed the court to have contacted police in advance on his behalf on Nov. 4 to inform them that he would turn himself in if, and when, charges were filed. In addition to that, Henein pointed out that Ghomeshi has remained in the province since the allegations were made public.
