Liberal leader, Justin Trudeau, has mentioned in his recent remarks that he hopes a “rigorous” independent review will soon look into the allegations of personal misconduct against two MPs, Scott Andrews and Massimo Pacetti, he recently suspended from the Liberal caucus. These remarks were made by Mr. Trudeau exactly three weeks after he suspended them for allegedly acting inappropriately toward two female NDP MPs.

However, the allegations are stuck in a political gridlock. The Liberals called for a neutral investigator, in response to which House of Commons Speaker, Andrew Scheer, promised “external experts” to assist with the harassment complaints. Whereas, the stalemate seems to be over now as one of the two unidentified NDP MPs have vowed to participate in a confidential review offered by the Speaker. During an interview this week, the MP alleged she had sex with Mr. Pacetti “without explicit consent.” Whereas, Mr. Pacetti is still maintaining his innocence and announced to be willing to go through a confidential process mediated by an independent third party so that “standards of fairness and the presumption of innocence” can be maintained.

Mr. Trudeau has informed reporters that he is “hopeful” that the process offered by the Speaker will now be launched. However, he refrained to indicate any possible scenario in which the accused MPs would be allowed back into the caucus and allowed to run as Liberals in the 2015 election. Mr. Scheer has highlighted “the most successful resolution of any harassment complaint relies on the willingness of all involved parties to come together to address the issues.”
