Former media tycoon and current Parti Québécois MNA, Pierre Karl Péladeau, has finally confirmed that he will be running for the leadership of the Parti Québécois. The revelations were made by Péladeau after he delivered a powerful and impassioned speech at the Université de Montréal on Thursday morning, in response to a question from a student in the audience.

Péladeau hadn’t had formally declared his candidacy until now, when he dedicated most of his 40-minute talk to the subject of sovereignty. Péladeau addressed a lecture hall jam-packed with students who had gathered to hear him speak about Quebec’s lack of autonomy when it comes to its own economic and cultural future. Péladeau pointed out that “the good news is that we can be inspired by the work done by the Scottish and the Catalonians,” highlighting that access to higher education is the primary ingredient in building a prosperous Quebec.

By announcing his candidacy Péladeau has joined an already congested list of candidates including Rosemont MNA Jean-François Lisée, Marie-Victorin MNA Bernard Drainville, Vachon MNA Martine Ouellet, Lac-Saint-Jean MNA Alexandre Cloutier and labour rights activist Pierre Céré. Having said that, numerous recent polls claim that Péladeau is most suited to win the race regardless of the number of candidates. Polls show that he is not only popular among PQ supporters but also with the voters in general. Péladeau’s announcement drew loud applause from the students, in response to which he said “thank you,” adding that “I intend to pick up my nomination papers this afternoon at PQ headquarters.”
