Michael Sona’s lawyer has announced to have launched an appeal of his conviction and sentence for his role in sending robocalls that suspiciously directed voters to the wrong polling station in Guelph, Ont., during the 2011 federal election.

Consequently, Sona was sentenced by Judge Gary Hearn on Nov. 19 to nine months in jail for his role in the scheme. Judge Hearn stated that the Elections Act violations were “an affront to the electoral process,” adding that the tough sentence was meant to “send a message to others that are so inclined that such trickery in the political arena is conduct that will be dealt with by the court in a significant way.” Sona now rests at Maplehurst Correctional Complex, i.e. a maximum security detention centre in Milton, Ont., since the sentencing.

According a notice of appeal filed by Ottawa lawyer, Howard Krongold, on Tuesday, Sona intends to appeal both the verdict and the sentence. One of Ontario’s top appeal lawyers, Krongold, mentioned on Thursday that prison has been difficult for Sona. He said that “I think he is finding it difficult but he is doing the best he can under the circumstances.” Krongold is anticipated to explain the reason for the appeal in complete detail on Friday as he seeks bail for Sona. He said that “I’m not really in a position to say anything about how the appeal’s ultimately going to unfold,” adding that “we’re going to explore the record and take a very close look at issues that arise.”
