A renowned Canadian password management startup, PasswordBox, has confirmed to be acquired by Intel as it aims to amplify its Internet security efforts. The Montreal-based company’s product is anticipated to become a part of Intel Security, i.e. a branch of the chipmaker focusing on Internet security. The online blog post by the startup last week failed to disclose financial terms of the deal.

The application, PasswordBox, allows users to store log-in credentials to websites and apps in a secure repository while enabling the user to log in to sites without having to manually type in passwords. Launched in June 2013, PasswordBox has grown relatively quickly to acquire 14 million downloads over the last year and a half. Security software became a key component in the chipmaker’s business after it acquired security firm McAfee in 2011. Recently, Intel disposed the McAfee name from its suite of security products and replaced it with Intel Security.

In its blog post, PasswordBox failed to provide any inform on Intel’s plans with the product. Currently, Intel Security is offering PasswordBox’s premium subscription service, previously sold for $12 per year, for free to all new and existing customers until the “release of a new product.” PaswwordBox mentioned in its blog post, “to our 14 million downloaded users, from everyone at Team PasswordBox, ‘Thank You’ doesn’t even come close to expressing our gratitude,” adding that “you’ve trusted us to manage your digital lives, shared your feedback and ideas, and let us know how using PasswordBox has improved your daily lives.”
