A mother who had her baby boy and vehicle stolen for a short while on Wednesday morning informed police to have left the car running when she dashed inside a Malton gas station to pay for fuel. She alleged to have returned in about 30 seconds at 9:02 a.m. and found the car, and the baby sitting inside, missing. Police took about 30 minutes to find her nine-month old son unharmed inside the same vehicle abandoned in front of an apartment building.

Peel police spokesperson, Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick, revealed that is “emotionally distraught” and “traumatized” over the ordeal. It was added that “she got her baby back safe and sound but it’s still traumatizing.” Though Fitzpatrick stressed that the woman’s decision to leave the car was not a wise one, she said the woman will not face any charges because “something like that could happen to anyone.”

Investigators are working on finding the suspect as they obtained footage from a surveillance camera at the gas station. Police has publicly revealed description of the suspect and Fitzpatrick alleged that if the suspect is caught, he will likely face a charge of theft and not a charge of abduction. She explained that “everything we’ve seen shows it was a crime of opportunity” and “all we have right now is a vehicle theft, not an abduction. To lay a charge of abduction, the theft of vehicle would have been done to gain custody and control of child but there is nothing to show that.”
