Calgary council has scheduled to host another chapter in the ongoing debate over secondary suites during Monday’s council meeting. Even though the council still seems far from making a final decision, the mayor is optimistic headway can be made. The latest report has highlighted how involved communities and neighbours should be involved in deciding if someone should be allowed to outfit their home with a secondary suite.

In his remarks, Councillor Peter Demong alleged that kind of involvement would help sell him on the idea. He said that “if that goes through, I would be more than willing to accept the concept of it but I need to see how that actually rolls out,” adding that “we’re voting to see what parameters we could put around secondary suites and what that would look like going forward.”

Whereas on the other hand, Councillor Ray Jones adamantly opposed a blanket policy for secondary suites in R1 zoned properties. He mentioned that “the biggest complaint I’m getting is from people living in R1s, wondering if the price of their taxes is going down because if there’s an R1S next to their property, is that devaluing their property?”  In addition to that, Councillor Jones alleged that “my daughter lives in one and pays $1,500 a month,” adding that “if that’s affordable then we’re going the wrong way because I think some of these landlords are getting really greedy because of the shortage.”
