Although Rebel Five member, Theresa Oswald, hasn’t officially declared to run for the upcoming NDP leader election, several senior party members have still come out to support her. According to former party president, Lorraine Sigurdson, the party’s best chance to win the next election is with the former cabinet minister at the helm.

In her remarks, Sigurdson stated that “I think that she has got a broad range of experience in cabinet and in government. I think she is very articulate, she has a proven record of leadership, and I think she is the one who can take on Brian Pallister.” In addition to Sigurdson, other executive members of the party, including Becky Barrett and Darlene Dziewit, have also asserted that Premier Greg Selinger needs to be replaced as leader. Sigurdson stressed that “I believe a new leader would bring new life into the party and it is going to be a difficult election to win, but we will have a better chance with someone like Theresa at the helm,” adding that “so that is why I have said that Theresa should be a candidate for the leadership and I hope she announces that soon.”

In addition to that, Sigurdson remarked that “I think a number of people will come on side with us once she announces her candidacy.” Having said that, Sigurdson acknowledged that it will still be an uphill battle for Oswald to take down an incumbent premier but Oswald’s attributes will help her gain support within the party.
