Ottawa police have confirmed to be investigating a case related to the robbery of 101-year-old Second World War veteran, Ernest Côté. Police revealed that the suspect, almost a 50-year-old male, is believed to have tied up Côté and robbed him in his apartment building in the New Edinburgh community of Ottawa, Ont. on Thursday morning.
It was revealed that Côté was alone in his apartment when a man posing to be a City of Ottawa employee buzzed into the building around 7:30 a.m. The suspect allegedly sought money from Côté at door, but when he refused, the suspect tied the elderly man up and searched the apartment before fleeing with cash and undisclosed items. Sources have alleged that the suspect put a bag over Côté’s head after tying him up. Thereafter, Côté was able to free himself and call police once the suspect left. A member of Côté’s family, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed on Friday that police have done an excellent job investigating the case. It was mentioned that “Mr Côté is fine, other than a few bruises,” and that Côté is back in his apartment and he will be much more careful about who he lets into the building.
Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that Ottawa’s Chief of Police, Charles Bordeleau, gave Côté a courtesy call this morning. Staff Sgt. Mike Haarbosch confirmed that they are following several tips as “we’re working through this morning, to see if there are any viable leads.”
