Family and friends are mourning the tragic death of seven-year-old Erin Moore, who passed away in a rock sliding incident at Britannia Beach on Monday during on a hike near Lions Bay with her mother and brother. The mayor of Lions Bay, Karl Buhr, confirmed that the family was part of a group of 20 people hiking on Unnecessary Mountain when tragedy struck.

According to Buhr, “there was a group of kids in the group that walked across a boulder, which gave way when the last kid walked across.” Erin was struck by rocks and boulders, causing her to get buried in the debris of the ensuing slide. Search manager for Lions Bay Search and Rescue Society, Martin Colwell, alleged that “it looked like a whole chunk of it gave away while she was standing on it because it was waterlogged, presumably.” The call for rescue about the accident was made at around 10:15 a.m., after which a ground team was immediately dispatched from Lions Bay and a helicopter team flew in from North Shore Rescue.

At the moment, Moore’s family and the other hikers, which included four nurses, did all they could to desperately pull the boulders away and free the girl. Witnesses also confirm that CPR was performed and a defibrillator and oxygen were used in an attempt to save her life. Erin’s father arrived at the scene during rescue efforts, but the child succumbed to her injuries without regaining full consciousness.
