A recent Environment Canada alert has warned that a low pressure system is developing that may reach Lake Huron and ruin travel plans for those flying out of Toronto on Christmas Eve. The national agency issued a wind warning and a special weather statement for the city on Wednesday. It cautioned of winds gusting up to 90 kilometres/hour in open areas, which might reach up to almost 100 km/hour in regions bordering the northeastern shore of Lake Erie.
The statement issued by Environment Canada said that “the very strong winds will continue for a few hours after the passage of the front, then very slowly ease off a little by Christmas morning,” adding that “motorists travelling for the Christmas holidays should be prepared for difficult driving conditions especially on highways exposed to strong and gusty crosswinds.” In addition to that, the national weather agency also warned residents that strong winds may damage trees and down power lines. It was mentioned that “damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.”
On the other hand, those with planning to fly out of Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport might face delays or cancellations. Porter Airlines mentioned in a statement issued on its website that “unfavourable weather is forecast which may result in flight cancellations and delays.” According to Environment Canada, episodes of rain, fog and thunderstorms are anticipated throughout the day. The fog patches are expected to lift later this morning.
