The eight-year-old Quebec boy who lost his parents and two siblings overnight in a horrendous apartment fire is still resting in a hospital bed unknown of the tragedy. According to the officials, the fire started at around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday in an apartment building in Les Coteaux, Que., i.e. a small town located approximately 60 kilometres southwest of Montreal.
Quebec provincial police has confirmed that the three people found dead at the scene were 37-year-old Patrick Gagnon, 32-year-old Karine Desrochers-Gauthier and their four-year-old daughter, Lorie. Whereas, their two-year-old son, Felix, died later in hospital, leaving behind his 8-year-old brother, Matthis, who remains in a critical but stable condition in a Montreal hospital. Karin’s grandmother, Mariette Lalonde Desrochers, said that she is “living an unimaginable hell.” Whereas a resident of the same apartment building, Desrochers, alleged that she first ran upstairs after heard a loud scream. Desrochers said that “I opened the door and tried to go in but there was a wall of smoke,” adding that “we tried but there was nothing we could do.” Consequently, she came back and called 911 for help.
The official cause of the fire is yet to be determined but firefighters believe that blaze was caused by a lit cigarette. According to Lac St-François fire chief, Michel Pitre, there were no smoke detectors in the apartment and urged people to keep their smoke detectors connected. He stressed that “they don’t stop fires, but they save lives.”
