Prime Minister Stephen Harper has released a 63-second-long Christmas greetings video, in which he also asked Canadians to pay tribute to soldiers fighting the Islamic State. The video message recorded and posted to his website showed Mr. Harper repeating his party’s boasting political messaging about the state of Canada’s economy, as it said Canadians “have many reasons to celebrate” during Christmas.

In his remarks, Mr. Harper stated that “we live in a beautiful country, a compassionate country, a prosperous country… around the world our country is also known for doing what is good and right, and for protecting the vulnerable, promoting peace, and defending the freedom of all people.” However, he added that “amid all the festivities, please say a prayer of thanks for the brave men and women in uniform, who serve this Christmas in harm’s way, especially those fighting the terrorists of the so-called Islamic State. In our abundance, and in the spirit of Christmas, I’d also ask you to show kindness to the less fortunate.”

So far, Canada has committed almost 600 Royal Canadian Air Force personnel to conduct airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq, while refraining from committing any ground troops. The Canadian mission includes CF-18 fighter jets, one Polaris refueling plane and two Aurora surveillance planes. The current commitment is due to end in April, in case there is no extension. Ending his video message, Mr. Harper conclusively greeted: “Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Season’s Greetings.”
