The young child was transported home with his family early this morning following treatment at Children`s Hospital to repair a severe laceration he allegedly suffered while being held hostage by a man armed with a knife, in the downstairs washroom at the Ray-Cam Community Center.
The name of the accused will not be released until charges are approved. The family involved in the ordeal has requested privacy.
Background:
A three year old boy was rescued by police following a hostage taking incident at the Ray Cam Community Centre.
Police were called to the Centre shortly before 6:00 p.m. on November 23rd after a 9-1-1 caller reported a man yelling and screaming and holding a knife.
The incident quickly escalated when the man grabbed a three year old boy who was in the Centre with his mother. He took the child into a basement bathroom and barricaded himself and the boy inside.
Officers quickly arrived, locked down the Centre and evacuated everyone. Negotiators were brought in and Emergency Response Team members brought in their robot to help communicate effectively and safely with the man.
By midnight, officers obtained the man’s name and a family member came to assist the negotiators, which continued until the man’s mental state deteriorated to a point where he allegedly cut the boy’s cheek.
Emergency Response Team officers moved in and rescued the boy. He was taken to hospital with a deep five-inch cut to his cheek.
The man was taken into custody and then to hospital. He is facing possible charges of forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and other weapons related charges.
