Toronto Fire Services Platoon Chief, Kevin Shaw, has called the fire that broke down two landmark Toronto restaurants, Sotto Sotto and Spuntini Ristorante, suspicious. In a press conference by Shaw on Friday, he said that the speed of the four-alarm fire fuelled suspicions.

In his remarks, Chief Shaw said “its seven o’clock on a pretty busy evening, I guess, when the crews arrived last night and it was pretty much fully [engulfed],” adding that “It doesn’t appear there was a smouldering fire.” Luckily, both the restaurants on Avenue Road, south of Davenport, were closed at the time and the tenant in the upper-level apartment was visiting his family. The vacant building caught fire on Christmas Day eventually leading to a single minor injury burns to the neck of a fireman, caused by flying embers. Shaw explained that structural concerns slowed down the fire crews’ work, but they were still able to retrieve a few items.

Firefighters were able to successful bring out hard drives belonging to the businesses and found a saxophone belonging to the tenant. A professional musician, Jared Welsh, who seemed okay with losing his other possessions, calling them “just objects,” was happy to see the saxophone coming through the blaze intact. He said that “this is pretty important to me, I’m glad I got it back.” Adding that “I’ve travelled … and been living out of two suitcases, you know, going to school overseas and stuff like that. I’ve started over before, I can do it again.”
