Actress who played the role of Bill Cosby’s wife on The Cosby Show, Phylicia Rashad, has for the first time publicly addressed the controversy surrounding her long-time co-actor on Tuesday. During a luncheon in New York that celebrated the new movie Selma, Rashad spoke in favor of Mr. Cosby and asked people to “forget these women” who have accused the comedian.
In her remarks, Rashad implied that more than 20 women who have accused Mr. Cosby of sexually assault are seemingly involved in a greater conspiracy to undermine the 77-year-old’s place in culture. She alleged that “what you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture,” adding that “someone is determined to keep Bill Cosby off TV. And it’s worked. All his contracts have been cancelled.”
Upon inquiry about the two supermodels who have accused Mr. Cosby, namely Beverly Johnson and Janice Dickinson, Rashad said nothing more than “Oh please.” Mr. Cosby is set to perform in three differently locations, including Kitchener, Ont., on Wednesday night, however protestors are planning to demonstrate at all three of Cosby’s Ontario performances. Speaking about the legacy of her and Cosby’s longtime show, Rasheed said that “this show represented America to the outside world. This was the American family. And now you’re seeing it destroyed. Why?”
