In response to the recent horrific act of terrorism in Paris, France, where three gunmen killed 12 people at a French newspaper’s offices, Canada Prime Minster Stephen Harper has instructed his cabinet and senior officials to contact their French counterparts and offer assistance.

According to the statement issued by Mr. Harper, he alleged that the attack was “a barbaric act” that serves as a “grim reminder that no country is immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world.” In his remarks, Mr. Harper alleged that “Canada and its allies will not be intimidated and will continue to stand firmly together against terrorists who would threaten the peace, freedom and democracy our countries so dearly value. Canadians stand with France on this dark day.” PMO confirmed that Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet on Security and Intelligence, David Vigneault, briefed the Prime Minister about the incident today.

Whereas on the other hand, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair also condemned the act as “senseless violence.” Quite noticeably, Mr. Mulcair holds dual Canadian and French citizenship, and his wife is also French. During a press conference in the National Press Theatre in Ottawa, Mr. Mulcair said he wanted to speak out in the home of the parliamentary press corps. He said that “everybody in the world who treasures fundamental values like freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, understands the importance of standing up to this sort of cowardly gesture.”
