Sturgeon County Fire fighters were called on to a fire in Sturgeon County, i.e. approximately one hour north of Edmonton, on early Thursday morning after Pine Sands Estates residents, near Sandy Lake, reported to have heard an explosion-type fire coming from a mobile home in the area.
Sturgeon County Fire Chief, Pat Mahoney, explained that “from the reports that I have, it was an initial large blast,” due to which “most of the neighbours woke to a large explosion this morning and a fully engulfed trailer.” He alleged that “by the time our crews got here, the fire was smaller, and they were able to extinguish it fairly quickly and get it under control.” Mother of the homeowner, Elsie Johnston, revealed that her son, Randy Johnston, wasn’t home at the time but “he’s pretty shook up about it all, he has no home, and everything he owned was in there.”
According to Johnston’s cousin, Wendy Pasko, the home carried a lot of sentimental value for Johnston. Pasko alleged that “it was his dad’s place, and when his dad passed away, he bought it,” adding that “he just wanted to have it good, and that his dad would be proud he fixed it up, it was good – and now it’s gone.” According to Morinville RCMP Sgt. Mathias, the fairly large explosion could have been possibly the result of explosion likely caused be the pressurized canisters or possible guns or ammunition inside the building.
