According to the colleagues of embattled Calgary mayor, Naheed Nenshi, his insistence in refusing to apologize for his comments about other councilor being drunk might result in a potential whistleblower complaint and a stretch of difficult council relations.

Nenshi has refused to apologize for his remarks at a committee meeting last week as he claims that he was only addressing complaints he’d heard about the use of alcohol and highlighting the policy gap for council. Responding to the mayor’s remarks, Coun. Jim Stevenson stated that “he doesn’t feel that he’s ever wrong,” adding that “I think he should have apologized and cleared this up, because I think it was poor judgment on his part and the other councillors’. I expect more from the mayor than that.” Almost 7 out of 14 councillors have publicly denounced the mayor’s comments.

The councilor currently leading the so far unsuccessful call for an apology, Coun. Joe Magliocca, has threatened to pursue a whistleblower probe into the mayor’s actions or force his hand by finding him in violation of the council ethical conduct policy, which Nenshi has championed. Another councilor, Ward Sutherland, mentioned that the mayor’s action and lack of contrition will make council co-operation harder. He stated that “of course it will. There’s 12 individuals that aren’t very happy right now,” adding that “and simply, they think it’s brushed off? I think there will be a rude awakening.”
