An Ontario provincial politician, Progressive Conservative MPP Randy Hillier, has recently announced that his son, a Canadian military veteran who joined Kurdish forces battling Islamic State two months ago, has returned home “safe and sound.” According to a post on Hillier’s Facebook page on Tuesday, he stated that “we are proud and relieved that Dillon has returned safely home from the Middle East.”
Hillier’s son, 26-year-old Dillon Hillier, had gone to fight alongside the peshmerga. According to Hillier, his son would be “taking time to readjust and reunite with friends and family at home before he is available for any further public comment or availability.” Dillon is a retired corporal who served in the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and went to Iraq in November to join the peshmerga, calling it “the right thing to do.”
The peshmerga had been recruiting Westerners into its ranks, but a Facebook post by the organization last week said that its volunteer co-ordinator had been “released of duties.” According to the note, prospective recruits should make their way to Patriotic Union of Kurdistan headquarters in Iraq, but “you very likely won’t be used for direct engagement unless it’s really urgent.” So far, the Kurdish forces have successfully regained control of Kobani. Quite noticeably, Dillon Hillier has now become the first veteran of the Canadian military known to have joined Kurdish forces battling Islamic State. According to Hillier, more Canadians are preparing to join him at the front lines.
