In a press conference after a citywide boil-water advisory in Winnipeg, manager of engineering services for the city’s water and waste department, Geoff Patton, mentioned on Wednesday that “this is a boil-water advisory, not a no-water advisory,” adding that “it’s a precautionary boil-water advisory.” The health authority assured that there are no reports of anyone falling ill from the water.

The authorities stressed that results of retests of samples for E.coli and coliform bacteria are expected on early Wednesday afternoon. According to Patton, the original samples might have been false-positives and “this is our prime concern.” He alleged that “we need to get to the bottom of this,” pointing out that if the water tests positive for bacteria again, the city could flush the system with chlorine so there is nothing to be worried about. Patton added that “we are looking at a number of ‘What if?’ scenarios.”

Talking about Winnipeg’s first ever citywide boil-water advisory issued on late Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Brian Bowman stated that “the question that I asked a number of our experts from the city of Winnipeg and the engineers in particular is, ‘What assurances can you provide people on the west side of the city, if these are accurate tests, that their water is safe?’” Mayor Bowman stated that “we couldn’t be given 100% assurance…We do really have a connected (water) system, so out of an abundance of caution, we’re issuing it citywide.”
