A 22-year-old man has pleaded guilty to Manslaughter and a 23-year-old woman from the City of Markham has pleaded guilty to Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life in connection with the 2013 death of their one-month-old baby.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2015, Kien Phat Tran pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of Manslaughter before the Honourable Justice Peter C. West of the Ontario Court of Justice. He was sentenced to six years incarceration.

Thi My Phuong Bui pleaded guilty to Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life and was sentenced to serve six months in prison.

On August 22, 2013, York Regional Police officers were notified about the death of a male infant whose parents had brought him to a local hospital without any vital signs. Members of the Homicide Unit assisted the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario in the initial investigation which revealed suspicious circumstances surrounding the baby’s death that was later determined to be a homicide. On Tuesday, August 27, 2013, the infant’s parents were arrested without incident for the murder of their son.

The two accused have been held in custody since their arrest.
