Budd Standoff Ends as RCMP Arrest Suspect of Abduction Case

Suspect Jonas Budd’s sister has confirmed that the 16-hour standoff between her brother and the RCMP is finally over. Budd’s sister, Joyce, posted on her Facebook page that the suspected shooter of a 17-year-old boy and the alleged abductor of a teenage girl earlier this week is now in custody. Budd was surrounded by police inside a residence in Sturgeon Landing, Sask. most of the day on Thursday.

In a later post on her Facebook page, Joyce Budd added: “End of it. My brother is in custody. Thank you for the support to many family and friends and friends of Jonas’ and new friends made through this difficult time.” 43-year-old Budd is a suspect in the killing of Dustin Bird and is wanted as part of an Amber Alert involving Bird’s 17-year-old girlfriend. However, the alert was soon cancelled after she was found unharmed near Cranberry Portage in Manitoba on Wednesday. The alert was issued after the officers responded of a gunshot report at the teen’s home in Lac La Ronge, Sask., shortly after 3 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The teenage girl, the daughter of Budd’s ex-partner, was located hours later near Cranberry Portage, about 450 kilometres away from Lac La Ronge.

Thereafter, Budd escaped an arrest, ran on foot and fled into the bush, before resurfacing at the residence in Sturgeon Landing on Thursday morning. Sturgeon Landing is near the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, i.e. approximately 120 kilometres south of Flin Flon.
