An extensive fire at a Manitoba farmhouse has killed four young boys of a large family living there. The reeve of the Rural Municipality of Morris, Ralph Groening, alleged that “we also know that the adults, the parents, put every effort into saving all of their children but were unsuccessful,” adding that “it was a large family and it’s a huge tragedy.”

The fire started overnight near the small community of Kane, in Morris, i.e. about 90 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg. The family included two adults and seven children lived in the home. The municipality officials have scheduled a press conference at 2 p.m. CT to reveal further information. The grandfather of the children, Henry Froese, revealed that the boys who died ranged in age from two to 15. Whereas, local fire Chief Bernard Schellenberg revealed that the crews were called out a little after midnight and the house was already fully in flames by the time they arrived. He stated that “one section of the house, which is a new addition, had already collapsed, and the older portion of the house had fire coming out of the windows.”

Chief Schellenberg explained that three children were already outside when the fire started, but four were trapped inside and “it sounded like the parents tried to go in to get their children, but with heavy smoke conditions, they could not.” The parents are in hospital in Winnipeg, where they are being treated for smoke inhalation, while the three children who survived are staying with neighbours. Froese confirmed that “My son is in the hospital. His wife is here, too, but she seems to be physically fine,” adding “they are all in shock.”
