Mourners packed a midtown Toronto church today in order to pay their final respects to a little three-year-old boy, Elijah Marsh, who died after wandering off into the cold for hours on Feb. 19. Marsh wandered around for several hours after leaving his grandmother’s apartment early in the morning wearing nothing more than a diaper, T-shirt and boots.

The tragic news of the innocent toddler’s death came as a shock for the entire city. Thereafter, people continuously started to come by the grandmother’s apartment building and lay flowers, teddy bears and cards. Meanwhile, an online fundraising campaign has successfully raised more than $173,000 for the family so far. In a statement issued a few days ago, Elijah’s mother, Georgette Marsh, openly thanked the public for the outpouring support and invited the public to attend the funeral. She mentioned that “I know so many people, people who don’t know him, love him and feel for me and family who are grieving so much.”

Consequently, mourners lined up hours before the funeral at St. Matthew’s United Church near Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue on Saturday, which is the same church where the boy was baptized. Although people were still arriving, the doors of the church were closed around 10:45 a.m., leaving dozens behind since the church had reached capacity. The funeral follows a public visitation that was held Thursday at a funeral home near Dufferin Street and Rogers Road.
