29 fourth-year dentistry students at Dalhousie have issued a joint statement on Sunday comprising of expressions of remorse and regret on behalf of the 12 unnamed members of a scandalous Facebook group. The statement mentioned that “from the beginning of this process in December we felt incredibly remorseful and took ownership of what we did (individually and collectively).”

Furthermore, the statement added that “our conduct as members of the Facebook group was hurtful, painful, and wrong. It has impacted our classmates, friends, families, faculty, staff, patients, the university community, the profession and the public.” The comprehensive message appeared on the Dalhousie website on Sunday but was not included in any press release to the media. In addition to that, the statement included response from the six female victims of misogynistic and humiliating posts on the Facebook page. The publicly unnamed females mentioned in the statement that “as women directly impacted by the Facebook posts released to the media, we decided to participate in this restorative justice process as a way to address the harmful conduct revealed by the posts and our experiences of the broader culture they reflect within our faculty, university and society.”

The issue received national attention in December, when posts of a 13-member Facebook group called ‘Class of DDS 2015 Gentlemen’ started surfacing on the media. The posts showed group members asking each other nasty sexual questions involving two female students. Additionally, the posts also showed a picture of a bikini-clad woman with the similar caption, along with other insulting material.
